

What is the biofield?
The biofield is the field of energy and information that surrounds and permeates the human body. The term is not New Age language, it was formally introduced in 1992 by an ad hoc panel convened at the U.S. National Institutes of Health (Office of Alternative Medicine), which defined it as a field that surrounds and interpenetrates living bodies and influences their function. In 1994 it became an official medical subject heading (MeSH) at the U.S. National Library of Medicine.
In practical terms, your biofield has two measurable layers: the bioelectric currents that run through your nerves, heart, and muscles, and the biomagnetic field those currents generate around your body. It is your living electrical signature.
The measurable evidence
Mainstream medicine already reads the biofield every day, it simply uses clinical names for it:
- ECG (electrocardiogram) measures the heart’s electrical activity. The heart generates the body’s strongest electromagnetic field, measurable, with sensitive instruments, several feet from the body (HeartMath Institute).
- EEG (electroencephalogram) measures the brain’s electrical rhythms, which shift between focus, relaxation, and sleep.
- EMG (electromyogram) measures the electrical signals of muscle tissue.
- MEG and MCG (magneto-encephalography and magneto-cardiography), read with SQUID magnetometers, detect the magnetic fields produced by the brain and heart, direct measurement of the body’s biomagnetic field.
None of this is controversial. What biofield science adds is the study of how these fields carry information, interact, and can be influenced to support health.
Coherence: the key finding
Research from the HeartMath Institute describes a state called physiological coherence, when heart rhythm, breathing, and brain activity synchronize into a smooth, ordered pattern. Studies associate this coherent state with lower stress hormones, clearer thinking, better emotional regulation, and improved performance.
The opposite, chronic stress, produces dissonance: an erratic heart rhythm that disturbs brain clarity, disrupted sleep that alters brainwaves, and hormonal imbalance that clouds judgment. This is what we feel as fatigue, irritability, mental fog, and being “out of rhythm” with ourselves.
Why sound and frequency
Because the biofield is a vibrating, resonant system, it responds to vibration. A steady, coherent frequency, whether from breath, sound, or focused intention, offers the body’s own organizing intelligence a stable reference to tune toward. As dissonance settles, tension releases, breathing deepens, and the system moves into an increased state of flow.

An honest word on the science
Biofield science is an active and still-developing research frontier. Physiological signals like ECG, EEG, and heart-rate coherence are well established; the broader biofield hypothesis, that these fields carry and exchange meaningful information for healing is an emerging area that leading researchers are working to understand more fully (Jain et al., 2015). I share this work because it resonates with what I and my clients experience, while remaining open to continuous learning.
